Sleep or Exercise: Which One Is More Important?

This is the question that I am constantly asking myself as my alarm goes off in the morning. Do I sleep longer, or do I exercise?

When I was getting 5 hours of sleep a night I regularly chose sleep over exercise as every minute was oh so precious, but now that I am getting more sleep, about 6-7 hours a night, I am much less convinced that I should get some extra sleep instead of doing a 30 - 40 minute workout in the morning.

This really is a viable question for me most mornings as I am not a good sleeper which means I am usually a little tired throughout the day. I usually wake up a couple times during the night and then fall back to sleep, but I rarely fall into a deep sleep (probably because of my overactive brain hehe). ;)

So what do the experts say? If you have to choose, do you sleep or do you exercise? Well, let's find out.

According to a TIME Magazine online article on the subject written by Markham Heid, both sleep and exercise are important to optimal health. This seams like a no-brainer but actually many sleep researchers and doctors are very hesitant to pick one over the other as more important. In this same article Edward Laskowski, MD, a resident and professor of physical medicine at Mayo Clinic, compares sleep and exercise to food and water, basically saying they share the same level of importance and necessity.

Dr. Phyllis Zee, a professor of neurology and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern University in Chicago, is featured in a New York Times article written by Gretchen Reynolds and states that a good night's sleep leads to better exercise, and that exercise can lead to better sleep. She believes that you really cannot rob your body of one over the other.

Yet, when pressed for a definite answer some doctors, like Cheri Mah, a sleep medicine researcher at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, might pick sleep, though hesitantly.

Now don't get too excited and think you never have to exercise again when you are tired.

In the same TIME article referenced above, Mah explains that according to most scientific literature, adults need a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night and that if you are functioning on less hours of slumber you are most likely not performing at your very best (even if you feel like you are). Because of this, Mah would pick sleep over exercise as sleep directly enhances or takes away from your everyday performance.

So sleep might be more important if you are not a good sleeper, but what about what Laskowski said about sleep and exercise being like food and water?

Dr. Baron seams to have a good solution to the sleep versus exercise predicament: better to rearrange your schedule to make both fit. A very practical answer. Dr. Kelly Glazer Baron is the director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at Northwestern and is also quoted in The New York Times article referenced above. For Dr. Baron both sleep and exercise are so important that she does not condone giving up one for the other. Instead she suggests to make certain lifestyle changes if you are having difficulty fitting both into your schedule.

She suggests looking through your day and figuring out where you can give something else up in order to make time for your exercise while still keeping your sleep in the morning. And in order to get more sleep without missing your workout time in the morning, she suggest going to sleep 20 - 30 minutes earlier than you normally would and waking up 15 minutes later, which actually comes out to an extra 600 - 800 minutes of sleep every month. Not so shabby eh?

For me, Dr. Baron's solution of changing a few things around to make exercise fit while still getting precious sleep seems more doable. If you think about it, setting 30 minutes aside for exercise is just a little more than 2% of your day!

The hard part is figuring out what to give up to make those 30 minutes available.

Will I choose sleep over morning exercise on the days I do not sleep well? Most likely. :) But I will also feel much more obligated to find another time to exercise during the day now that I know what the experts have to say. With knowledge comes responsibility!

Here's to getting enough sleep and exercising while I'm fully awake. ;)

Body & Hair Care...The Natural Way

I try to be pretty aware of what products I am putting on my body, hair, and face, and am constantly doing research about new organic products as well as classic ingredients that have now been labeled as disease causing and harmful to your health. Yet, as many of you know, being healthy can be expensive.

So the other day I decided I needed to get a more natural body lotion (besides my almond oil) and my friend had just told me about how to mix coconut oil with cocoa butter to make a body moisturizer. I thought I'd give it a try.

I go into Whole Foods and find organic pure coconut oil and cocoa butter and remember that I also need mascara and toothpaste (I had also decided earlier that day that I needed to buy a more healthy mascara). I also got a gallon of milk because we were out of milk and I wanted to be able to have cereal that night haha.

I'm at the check out stand and I'm thinking, this won't be that expensive, I mean I only got five items. Then the cashier tells me the total and I'm like, Oh my! The total was almost $50, making each item average out to $10 each. But it all added up correctly so what could I do but pay the total.

Moral of the story? Don't be shocked when you're a whole lot poorer but a whole lot healthier. ;)

New Trende Video is Here!

Sometimes it is hard to let seasons in our lives complete their cycles. The seasons may last a long time, or a short time, and many times we want the less enjoyable seasons to be over as quickly as possible. But sometimes we go through the harder seasons with less sunshine and cold so at the end we get to experience the beautiful spring. I hope you are encouraged as you watch this Trende video.

Love It or List It, Too

Would you love your house more if it had a makeover? Or are you done with your current place and want something new? That's the dilemma on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too. I really enjoyed watching the other version of this show (which is filmed in Toronto) and am super excited to check out the new show especially because there are two new hosts! And yes, this show is on Netflix. :) Remember to check out Trende's other Netflix Pix on trendeing.com.

Half-Price Paradise

Trends's Netflix Home Design week continues with the HGTV show Half-Price Paradise where homebuyers search for a new lifestyle in a place that is half the cost of living as their current housing situation. I have watched one episode of the show so far and it is definitely interesting and informative as you get to see what places are more expensive to live and where it is really cheap! (Whenever I watch these shows it makes me want to move to a less expensive state lol). Remember to check out the Netflix Pix page on trendeing.com for more fun shows to watch!

Feeling Good!

Sometimes it seems easy to take health and feeling good for granted. I know I am guilty of this as I do not normally get sick and am a generally healthy person. But...I have been quite sick these past few days. I have had a fever, a cold, and migraines since last week. This batch of sickness happens to be the third time I have gotten sick since January!

thegtguide.com

But, today I honestly feel a lot better. :) My head feels clear, my mind feels quicker, and I only have a little bit of a cough left, and I am so thankful for feeling good and seeing my health on the rise again.

Being healthy and not having to worry about how you are going to feel every morning or evening is a blessing and I know that not everyone is able to live this way. And I know that a lot of people have been sick this winter!

So even if you aren't all the way healthy yet, or if you do happen to be the perfect picture of health, let's celebrate feeling good and having energy and living life to the fullest!

Be Inspired

The feeling of inspiration can come about in different ways, from various sources, and at the most random of times. I think many times inspiration comes about accidentally, such as when we see a flower while walking and become inspired by the beauty of its color and the delicate details of its petals. Or when we read a thoughtful saying on Facebook that happens to show up in our feed.

But what about actually taking the time to intentionally seek out inspiration? How often do we look for inspiration?

This past weekend I was in LA touring the Warner Bros. Studios and I was overwhelmed with inspiration as I saw the actual costumes used for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and Harry Potter and sat in the "Central Perk" set of my favorite TV show Friends

And I thought, I should do this more often. I need to seek out what inspires me on a daily basis not just when I am on vacation or when I am free for a couple of hours.

My inspiration today was listening to the Harry Potter audio books while I drove to work. I started the audio book series a couple of months ago and then got out of the habit of listening, but I picked it back up today. Allowing myself to experience another world that is filled with interesting characters and adventures inspires my creativity and opens my mind to endless possibilities. And it was so worth it. My day felt more alive, I felt more satisfied, and my mind felt more free.

What inspires you? Take the time to find out how you are inspired and pursue your inspiration.

Whimsical dress from Anthropologie

I love this whimsical dress from Anthropologie, and it's on sale! The print is sophisticated and fun and is easy to dress up or down.

If I was going to keep this look casual I would pair it with low heeled ankle boots and a light billowy scarf to add more texture and dimension.

For a dinner time outfit I would add a pop of color with brightly colored pumps. The blue tones in this dress act as a neutral backdrop allowing multiple hues to compliment this look.

Love it! ~Hannah
